One of the most common questions I get before a family photography session in Los Angeles or at my Manhattan Beach studio is, “What should we wear?”

Wardrobe plays a big role in how your photos feel. My approach to family and newborn photography in Los Angeles is light, airy, and connection focused, so what you wear should support that and never distract from it.

Neutrals Always Work

If you’re unsure where to start, neutrals are always a safe and beautiful choice. Soft creams, warm beiges, gentle grays, and muted tones photograph effortlessly and help create that timeless, cohesive look my style is known for.

They also work year round, whether you’re planning a beach session, a studio newborn session in Manhattan Beach, or even holiday photos.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

You don’t need to match outfits exactly. In fact, it’s better if you don’t. Coordinating colors and tones across your family creates a more natural and elevated look.

Incorporating subtle texture like knits, linen, or soft fabrics can also add depth without taking away from the connection in your images.

Keep It Simple

Bold colors and busy patterns can feel overwhelming in photos and may pull focus away from what matters most, your family. Keeping things simple allows the emotion and interaction to really shine through.

Shoes Matter

Shoes can completely change the feel of your session. For a relaxed look, barefoot often works beautifully, especially in the studio or at the beach. The most important thing is that everyone is on the same page so the overall look feels cohesive.
