A couple months ago I photographed Chrystal’s amazing quinceanera. This was not your average 15 year olds birthday party. This quinceanera was like no event I have ever seen before. A ballroom dripped in crystals and guests covered in masks. With the help of Couture Events San Diego, The Westgate Hotel was turned into a Phantom of the Opera-esque masquerade ball.
This quinceanera may not have been your average 15 year old’s birthday party, but Chrystal is just your average 15 year old. A couple months before the quinceanera I got a chance to hang out with Chrystal. She was all glammed up for our photo session and even though she looked like a diva, she was anything but. We giggled about silly things, danced around and talked about boys; she was the easiest to work with. I knew the big day was going to be a breeze! I found Chrystal in the Presidential suite hanging out with her friends, listening to music and eating McDonalds. Just like a normal teenager. While I started photographing the details, Chrystal brought out the shoes she was going to wear. During the reception at a quinceanera there is a tradition where your father takes off one shoe and replaces it with another. Well, he was replacing her high heels for some rad Nike high tops! This girl is so cool! The rest of the day ran as smooth as I could have expected! I am normally rushing around like crazy, but at this event, my second shooter and I were actually given a moment to relax and eat and take in the beauty of the quinceanera. Topping off the beautiful night, Chrystal’s dad re-proposed to her mom in front of all their guests! After that, we were led into the evening with the two dances performed by the court. It was a night to remember! If all quinceaneras are like that, count me in to photograph every one of them!
